Grande Royale - Interview du 23/02/2021

1 Comme c'est notre première interview pour CoreandCo peux-tu nous dire pourquoi vous avez choisi un nom en français ?

Haha. On a juste pense que ça sonnait mieux et plus cool avec le E à la fin de Grand et Royal. On ne savait même pas que c'était du français quand on a choisi ce nom. Il me semble aussi que dans Pulp Fiction il y a un burger qui s'appelle royale with cheese ou un truc comme ça (NdP :notre royal cheese français).

 

2 Peux-tu présenter le groupe à nos lecteur ?

Grande royale est un groupe de rock'n'roll de Jönköping en Suède. Nous allons sortir notre 5ème album studio, Carry On en mars 2021 (NdP Le 26 pour être précis). On a beaucoup joué à travers l'Europe depuis nos débuts en 2013/2014.

Les membres du groupe sont actuellement :

Samuel Georgsson: basse et chant

Johan Häll: batterie

Gustav Wremer: guitare et chant.

Notre précédent guitariste Andy (Andreas Jenå) a décidé de quitter le groupe, alors dès que l'on en aura fini avec le virus, il faudra que l'on en recrute un.

 

3 Take it easy et Carry On ont été enregistrés avec le même line up. Qu'est-ce que ça a apporté à ce nouvel album ? Es-tu inquiet pour le prochain, sans Andreas ?

Je ne suis pas inquiet mais bien sûr c'est triste qu'Andreas ne joue plus avec nous. C'est l'un de mes meilleurs amis. Le travail sur le prochain album est déjà lancé et c'est bien bon.

 

4 Carry On est le 2ème album sur lequel tu chantes. Pourquoi avoir choisi de devenir le chanteur principal après le départ de Hampus Steenberg ?

Choisi n'est pas le mot que j'utiliserais. Hampus a décidé de quitter le groupe 2 mois avant une tournée en Espagne. Nous ne voulions pas annuler alors j'ai pris le chant. Quelques semaines après cette tournée, nous devions entrer en studio, et nous n'avions donc pas assez de temps pour trouver un chanteur. Mais maintenant je suis content d'assurer de le chant. Je galère encore, c'est un instrument compliqué mais c'est vraiment fun quand ça marche. Et puis j'aime bien être le front man quand on donne des concerts.

 

5 Ta manière de chanter est plus agressive sur le nouvel album (sans doute parce que la musique est plus crue), c'est quelque chose à quoi tu as pensé avant l'enregistrement ou ça s'est fait naturellement ?

Nous voulions que cet album soit plus cru, alors oui, j'ai essayé de chanter d'une manière plus agressive. Comme tu le dis les morceaux sont assez différents de ceux du précédent album et avaient besoin de plus de poigne. Je pense également avoir appris beaucoup sur le chant depuis que j'ai commencé à m'en occuper et aussi tu apprends beaucoup sur les tournées. Comment tu dois chanter pour ne pas perdre ta voix, etc.

 

6 Il y a un invité spécial avec Dregen sur « Just As Bad As You ». Comment vous êtes parvenus à l'avoir ?

On a rencontré Dregen quelques fois à différents endroits alors je lui ai juste demandé s'il voulait chanter sur un morceau du nouvel album. Je lui ai envoyé des démos et il a décidé de chanter sur « Just as bad as you »

 

7 Samuel (Georgsson, basse) partage le chant avec toi sur plusieurs morceaux, chantait-il déjà sur Take It easy ? Il y a aussi pas mal d'harmonies vocales bien classe sur le disque... S'il veut/ demande chanterait-il en tant que chanteur principal ?

Ouais, il a une voix bien cool, épaisse et crue. Et bien sûr qu'il peut chanter une chanson en entier s'il en a envie. On a déjà parler d'encore plus partager le chant sur le prochain album. Je suis un gros fan de groupes qui ont deux chanteurs ou plus. Il avait effectivement déjà fait des voix sur Take It easy.

 

8 Je suis un immense fan d'Imperial State Electric et je pense que Grande Royale partage des influences et le(s) style(s) pratiqué(s) avec eux (et ils sont tous de très bons chanteurs)... tu es d'accord avec ça ? Ça te choque si je dis qu'en quelque sorte ton groupe les remplace (comme Nicke a l'air trop occupé avec the Hellacopters et Lucifer) ?

Oui, je dirai que nous avons des choses en commun, je suis aussi fan d'Imperial State Electric alors ça aurait été bizarre de ne pas être influencé par eux et Nicke. C'est un très grand costard à enfiler que de remplacer Imperial State Electric.... Chaque groupe a son propre agenda etc. et je dirais que l'on partage la même passion pour la musique et tout ça plutôt que Grande Royale serait le nouvel Imperial State Electric. Nous pouvons bien sûr exister tous les deux.

 

9 Comme on l'a dit plus haut le nouvel album est plus cru que le précédent mais il contient beaucoup de jolis arrangements (du piano, un break jazzy, des percus...) est-ce que ces « détails » sont très importants pour vous, pour donner quelque chose de différent aux versions studio par rapport à celles jouées en concerts ?

Percussion et détails sont ce qui est le plus important à mon avis, c'est ce qui fait que l'on s'amuse en studio. Essayer des choses et certaines sonnent bien quand d'autres non. Pour moi enregistrer et jouer en concert sont 2 choses bien différentes. Habituellement tu as besoin de plus de percus et tout ça sur un enregistrement pour tirer le maximum d'une chanson. Le live c'est différent et tu en retires tant quand tu te tiens sur une bonne scène, l'atmosphère, ce que tu vois...

 

10 L'illustration de la pochette de Take It easy est très colorée et celle de Carry on est très sombre (à mon avis elle pourrait aussi convenir pour une groupe de black metal ou de doom), tu peux nous en dire plus ?

Oui nous voulions quelque chose de propre et simple, comme les chansons. C'est la tête d'un vieille statue égyptienne qui est intacte. Je pense que c'est un symbole de continuité (carry on : continuer) comme l'est le nom de l'album. Je trouve le résultat final génial !

 

11 As-tu des morceaux préférés sur le petit nouveau ?

« Schizoid lullaby ». J'aime l'histoire qu'elle raconte et la façon dont moi et San Miguel (c'est le surnom de Samuel) chantons chaque couplet. C'est une chanson en 3/4 puis nous passons à un 4/4 pour un petit moment avant de revenir en 3/4. Je l'aime beaucoup.

 

12 Vos camarades de label The Hawkins, Volcanova ou Hot Breath ont proposé des concerts en ligne, est-ce que c'est quelque chose que vous avez envie de faire avec le groupe ?

Nous avons enregistré 4 titres live en vidéo que Dany Torres, notre agent et ami espagnol proposera sur Facebook mais je ne sais pas quand. On verra ce qui se passera après.

 

13 C'est quelque chose que tu aimes regarder ?

Non, en fait non. J'ai essayé une fois ou deux mais ce n'est pas quelque chose pour moi. Peut-être que je réfléchis trop mais le seul truc auquel je pense quand je vois ces groupes faire ces streaming, c'est que c'est triste qu'ils ne puissent pas le faire en vrai dans un club sympa avec du public et boire une bière d'après concert et se marrer avec les gens présents.

 

14 Vos 2 premiers albums (Cygne noir et No fuss) ne sont plus disponibles depuis un bail, vous pensez les represser ?

On avait des plans avant l'arrivée du virus... peut-être dans le futur mais nous devons pouvoir aller sur les routes pour les vendre. La situation économique n'est pas idéale pour le moment.

 

15 Avec le confinement est-ce que l'excitation de la sortie d'un nouvel album est la même, sachant que vous ne pourrez pas tourner avant quelques mois... c'est un moyen de rester en contact avec les fan ou juste de continuer (carry on) ?

Haha. Carry on, oui tout à fait. Bien évidemment c'est triste que nous ne puissions pas jouer live, alors ce n'est pas le sentiment normal de folie ici. Mais je dois dire que nous sommes toujours très fiers de cet album et je suis sûr que les fans vont l'apprécier. Nous devons continuer, et tout ira mieux. Nous adorons jouer et enregistrer et on va continuer à faire ça même si le monde est ce qu'il est actuellement.

 

16 Y a-t-il des groupes de votre région ou avec qui vous êtes amis que tu as a envie de nous présenter ?

Beat City Tubeworks et Hällas sont de super groupes.

 

17 L'année dernière vous avez sorti un split 7'' avec Liar Thief Bandit... vous auriez envie d'un faire un avec l'un de ces groupes ? Avec qui rêverais-tu d'en faire un ?

Oui ça aurait été cool. Il va falloir que je leur en parle. Hmm, ça aurait été génial de bosser avec plusieurs groupes mais si je devais en choisir un, je dirais Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl est un mec extra.

 

18 Le dernier mot est pour toi si tu as un message pour vos fans !

Je dirais merci d'écouter notre musique et merci pour venir aux concerts (en temps normal). Carry on est à notre avis un super album et on attend avec impatience de vous le faire découvrir. Espérons qu'on puisse boire une bière et avoir une discussion quand nous jouerons en France !

 

English Version

1 As it's our first interview in CoreandCo can you tell us why you choose a French name for your band ?

Haha. We just thought it sounded cooler and bigger with the E in the end of Grand and Royal. Had no idea it was french when we choosed the name. I also think Pulp Fiction had a burger called a royale with cheese or something like that.

 

2 Can you introduce Grande Royale to our readers ?

Grande Royale is a rock'n'roll band from Sweden, Jönköping. We will release our fifth studio album Carry On in March 2021. We have played a lot all over Europe since the start in 2013/2014. Bandmembers right now are:

Samuel Georgsson: bass guitar and vocals

Johan Häll: drums

Gustav Wremer: guitar and vocals.

Our former guitar player Andy has decided to quit the band so whenever this virus is over. We need a new one.

 

3 The same line up recorded Take it easy and Carry On. Does it bring good thing on the final result for Carry On ? and so are you afraid for the next one without Andreas ?

I'm not afraid for the next one but of course it's sad that Andreas won't be playing anymore. He is one of my best friends. The progress of a new album is already in motion and it feels great

 

4 Carry On is the 2nd album of the band on which you're the main singer. Why did you choose to take the vocal duties after Hampus Steenberg left the band ?

Choose is not the word I would use. Hampus decided to quit the band 2 months before a tour in Spain. We didn't want to cancel the tour so I took the vocals. A few weeks after the tour we had studio time so there wasn't any time to find a new singer. But now I'm happy to have the vocal duties. Still struggling, it's a tough instrument but it is fun when it works ! Also, I enjoy being the "front man" when we are playing live.

 

5 Your singing is harsher on the new album (maybe as the music is rawer), is it something you thought about before the recording or did it come in a natural way ?

We wanted this album to be more raw so yes, I tried to sing it more harsh. As you say, it's different songs from the previous album so it needed more punch. I also think that I have learned a lot about singing since I started to sing and you learn a lot when you are out touring. How you should sing so your voice don't stop to work etc

 

6 There's a special guest, Dregen, singing on « Just As Bad As You ». How did you manage to get him involved on the record ?

We have met Dregen a few times in different places so I just asked if he wanted to sing on a song on the new album. I sent him some demos and he decided he wanted to sing on « Just as bad as you ».

 

7 Samuel is also sharing vocal duties on a couple of songs, did he already sing on Take It easy ? Also there're many cool vocal harmonies on the album... if he wants/asks, will he sing a whole song as the main singer ?

Yeah he has a cool voice. Thick and raw. Of course he can sing a whole song if he wants. We have talked about doing more sharing vocals on the next album. I'm a big fan of bands that have two or more singers. He also did some vocals on Take it easy.

 

8 I'm a very big fan of Imperial State Electric and I think Grande Royale is sharing influences and style(s) with them (and they also are all cool vocalists)... Do you agree ? And are you shocked if I say that somehow, your band replace them (as Nicke seems too busy with the Hellacopters and Lucifer) ?

Yeah I'd say that we have a few things in common. I'm also a fan of Imperial State Electric so it would have been strange if I wasn't influenced by them and Nicke. That is some big shoes to fill, replacing Imperial State Electric. All bands have their own agenda etc so I would rather say that we share the same passion for music and so on, rather than Grande Royale would be the new ISE. We can both exist.

 

9 As we said before the new album is rawer but there're a lot of nice arrangements in it (piano, jazzy breaks, percussion and so one)... are these "details" very important to you, to give a different feeling in studio versions than the one that will be played live ?

Percussion and details is most important in my opinion and it's all about having fun in the studio. Try things and some of them ends up good while other is bad. For me, recording and playing live is two different things. Usually you need more percussion etc on the recordings to get out the most of the song. Live is different and you get so much for free when you are standing at a good stage, the atmosphere, the visual etc

 

10 Take It easy artwork was very colorful, and Carry on one is very dark (in my opinion it could fit for a black metal or a doom band) can you tell us more about it ?

Yeah we wanted something clean and simple, just as the songs. It's the head of an old statue from Egypt and it still intact. I Guess it's a symbol for Carry On as the album is named. I think it turned out great!

 

11 Any favorite songs on the new one ?

« Schizoid lullaby ». I like the story it tells and how me and San Miguel (Samuel's nickname) sing each verse. Its a 3/4 beat song and then we change to 4/4 for a while and then back 3/4. I like it a lot.

 

12 Your label band mates The Hawkins, Volcanova or Hot Breath did on line shows, is this something you want to do with the band ?

We have recorded 4 songs live with video that Dany Torres, our booker and friend in Spain, will send via Facebook. Don't know when though. We'll see what happens after that

 

13 Is that something you like to watch ?

No actually not. I have tried once or twice but it's not really something for me. Maybe I overthink things but all I can think about when I'm seeing bands who do these online streams is that it's sad that they can't do it for real, in a nice club with audience and having a after show beer and laugh together with the people.

 

14 Your 2 first albums (Cygne noir and No fuss) have been unavailable for a while now, do you plan any repress ?

We had some plans before the virus came. Maybe in the future but we need to get out on the roads and sell them. The economic situation is not the best right now.

 

15 With the lockdown is it the same excitment to release a new album, when you know you won't be able to tour before a couple of months... is it a way to keep in touch with the fans or just to Carry on ?

Haha. Carry on, yes indeed. Of course it's sad that we can't play live so it's not the normal feeling of craziness going on here. But I must say that we are still very proud of the album and I'm pretty sure that the fans will like it. We have to Carry on, it will be better. We love to play and record music and we will continue doing that even though the world is what it is nowadays.

 

16 Is there any bands from your area or any fellow bands you want to introduce to us?

Beat city tubeworks and Hällas are great bands.

 

 

17 Last year you did a split 7'' with Liar Thief Bandit... would you like do to one with one of these bands ? with whom would you dream to do one ?

Yeah that would have been cool. I'll have to talk to them. hmm.., it would have been great to work with several bands but if I have to choose one I'd say Foo fighters. Dave Grohl is a cool dude.

 

18 The last word is for you if you have a special message to the fans !

I'd say thank you for listening to our music and thanks for coming to the shows (in normal times). Carry on is in our opinion a great album and we are looking forward to let you hear it. Hopefully we can have a beer and a chat soon when we play in France!
