High Reeper - Interview du 24/03/2019

High Reeper (interview)

English Version

1 Can you introduce High reeper to our readers ? How it started and you all were already playing in bands before ?

Zach Thomas vocals, Andrew Price guitar, Pat Daly guitar, Justin Di Pinto drums and Shane Trimble bass.

Zach, Pat and Andrew have been playing together on and off since they were teenagers. Zach, Pat, Andrew our original drummer Napz and I have been playing together in different projects for about 10 years. Justin has been playing in touring death metal bands forever. Napz left the band and we asked Justin to play with us. We’ve been friends for a long time so it was really easy...

2 To me it was a bit strange a death metal drummer joinning a heavy doom band, and now I understand !... For him is it difficult to play slower ? Did he need time to adapt ?

No it was a smooth transition because he’s a drumming nerd and grew up playing Black Sabbath, Dio, etc.

3 I think the new album is a bit slower than the first. Was it on purpose ? Or maybe because Justin has joined the band ?

It wasn’t necessarily done on purpose but we were happy that it was. It has a little bit more of traditional metal elements in it and that is because Justin is in the band yes.

4 Higher Reeper is released just one year after the 1st album (S/T)... Were a part of the songs on the new album already ready before you did the 1st LP ?

Nope We didn’t start writing this record until mid August and finished in October. With the exception of Apocalypse Hymn. We wrote that in the studio.

5 This dark ballad without drums is a special song in the album. Did you work in different way for this one (I mean apart writing it in the studio) ?

There is a story behind that song haha !

We were finishing up the record and we had two other songs that we weren’t happy with so we decided to cut them from the record. When we cut those songs we needed another song so we decided to do a dark ballad. We wrote the song very quickly and got it on the record. All told between writing, recording and mixing that song ,I would say we have less than three hours of work in the song. It came together really fast and we are very happy with the result. It changed the feel of the entire album. It was the perfect end to side one.

6 How is usally created a High reeper song ? Is it a band work or someone is composing alone ? What about the lyrics ?

It’s a group effort. Someone will have a riff that we all dig and we will use that as a starting point for a song. Lyrics/vocal melodies come later and that’s all Zach.

7 To me Black Sabbath (old time) is the main influence of the band... do you agree, and do you wish to add other bands ?

Well yes of course early Black Sabbath is a huge influence but not the only one by any means. Deep Purple and Judas Priest really anything that rocks.

8 You produced and mixed both albums and the bass is quite audible... is it only your will or a band decision ?

A band decision.

In addition, my mentor who masters the records also usually makes them a little bass heavy but I don’t mind too much.

9 The artwork by Solomacello is really very cool, did you work with him ?

Yes for sure. We had the idea and he executed it. We are beyond happy with it

10 Did you know is work before or is it an idea of the label ?

No, he did our first cover too. So yes we knew him already.

It was very important for us to have a cover that set the tone of the record. We had the idea in mind and knew that Solomacello was the only person who could execute it.

11 I also think the red vinyle really works with the artwork...

Thank you. Yes we put a lot of thought into the two colored pressings

12 Eventhough you're not the only american band (Duel for example) at HPS, is it strange to be an american band on an italian label ? Do you know each other with some of the label's bands ?

No no it’s not strange at all because there is a very cool scene for this type of music in Europe and we are very lucky to be a part of it.

Yes many of the bands on the label know each other. Ecstatic Vision are friends of ours and they are also based out of Philadelphia. We of course know Duel also and we know a few of the European bands on the label too.

13 Next month you'll begin a big european tour (but no show in France), what do you expect, are you excited or you feel the same as before an american tour ?

We do have one show in France ! In Chambery at Brin Du Zinc on 24 of April.

We haven’t toured the states really but that’s something we will be doing this year. We toured Europe last year and we loved it so we are all quite excited. As Americans there is definitely always a great sense of anticipation when you are playing outside of the country.

14 You'll be one of the band of a Vol 4 redux project can you tell us more about that ? Will it be available in Europe ?

It’s in its early stages so I don’t know a lot yet. All I know is that the lineup is totally insane. I assume it’ll be available in Europe.

We are humbled beyond belief to be included in this project. We still can’t believe it’s real.

15 Is your cover already recorded ?

No. We will be doing « Changes » and we are stoked for it.

16 The last word is for you !

I’d just like to thank you for taking your time and interviewing us. We really appreciate it and we are grateful that people dig what we are doing and they come out to shows and show their support. We also want to thank our label for being the best. They are so incredibly nurturing and supportive and none of this would be possible without their help.
