Ryte - Interview du 10/01/2020

Ryte (interview)

English Below !

Arik: Oui, merci mec !

English Version

Hi can you introduce Ryte to our readers?

Shardik: For sure! We are a four-piece band from Vienna/Austria, founded in 2016. That year, Hannes, Arik & I decided to start a new project together with the intend to play some sort of spaced out heavy music. Arik and I were already playing in Pastor for quite a few years and had the idea to start another band which should consist of long heavy riffs and loads of jammy solos. We looked for a drummer for some time and Arik by chance met Hannes at a Saviours show in Vienna. Arik and Hannes went to jam and shortly afterwards Ryte was founded. The only thing that was still missing was a bass-player. We finally found a Bass player in late 2016 with Lukas, who also plays at The Heavy Minds.

For me the band is a kind of intrumental using sometimes vocals... does that suite you ?

Lukas: I think it does, yes, because most of the material is indeed instrumental. In the very beginning we even planned to keep it that way. But over time we came up with certain parts (very few obviously) where we said okay, this could work out perfectly with vocals. It did and so we decided to scrap the idea of being a full instrumental band and sing in certain passages. Arik & Lukas are sharing he mic on the record.

I hear a lot of different influences Black Sabbath, (early) Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Santana (the « tribal parts ») with a 70's feeling, and psych touches? Do you agree? Any bands you want to add to your influences?

Lukas: Yes, we do agree! I guess it’s save to say that we’re more or less influenced by every band you just mentioned. But there’s way too much other music to name, that has influenced our way of perceiving and playing music in some way or another. But just to name a few others. relevant for the development of our sound, we’d choose names like Danava, Earthless, Pentagram, Sleep, Harsh Toke, Captain Beyond, Iron Claw, Psicomagia, Hawkwind,…

Even though all of us like, at least to some extent, completely different styles of music, it’s always this certain core of musical ideology that we always come back to for this particular project.

How is a Ryte song created?

Shardik: At first we had to take a different approach to songwriting as it differs a lot from what we were used to at this time. It's usually quite a long process that starts out with jamming a riff and building some kind of structure around it. From there on it kind of expands and ideas come in pretty naturally. We write everything together, so if anyone has an idea we try it out and see if we like it.

It's also essential to be in the right mood to make songwriting feel natural. There's rehearsals where we get a lot of stuff done, and on the other hand rehearsals where nothing feels right.

There're only a few lyrics but what do you talk about?

Arik: As soon as we find out i let ya know...ha

Any art (movies, books, painting...) influences to your music and lyrics?

Shardik: Definitely Lovecraft stuff, that guy knew how to create a very creepy and strange atmosphere in his works and besides that a whole lotta sci fi influences in general.

I think this black and white mammaoth is quite mighty and gives clues to what is on the album, old school and quite often really heavy... Did you work with the artist? Is the Mammoth somehow your logo (will we see it on other releases) ?

Arik: Yeah thanks man! We are all super stoked on how the artwork turned out, thats for sure.

Well about the artist, her name is Sandra Havik, Shardik and myself we met her and her boyfriend Pete in 2015 when we been on tour with Pastor we played in arlon that night the rest is kinda blurry haha but anyway we stayed in contact since then, good people.

About the mammoth, no its not gonna be our logo and neither it will appear on other releases I think. We kinda came up with the idea for it when we wrote our first jam “Raging mammoth” thats about it.

You're from Vienna (Austria) is there a big scene there? Do you often share the stage with the same bands? Any band from your country you wish to introduce to our readers?

Lukas: There are a few scenes in Austria, although they're by far not as extensive as they are in other countries for sure. For me personally it means a lot to communicate, play and work with creative, passionate people within a certain network, although it's quite small. We still appreciate it much though. Also, everyone of us in involved in different projects. Hannes is doing a lot of studio stuff and just recently recorded the upcoming album of a band of friends called Lupus for instance. Lukas & Arik are playing together in another band called Galactic Pot Healer, whose guitarist, Alex, also played drums in Pastor and sings in Avalanche! Over quite a long time we shared our rehearsal space with a band called Mothers of the Land who are pretty close to us as far as the musical approach is concerned.

Shardik: You should also check out our good friends in Iron Heel and Communication Killer, Iron Heel split up some time ago but have a new unheard project going on.

Will you tour for the album? And will you play in France?

Lukas:Well, we’d love to tour! Definitely! There are no concrete plans yet, but we hope to play quite a bit in 2020!
