Acid Mammoth - Interview du 04/12/2019

Acid Mammoth (interview)

English Below

English Version :

1 You created the band with 2 good friends, and then your father joined you 3 ? it's cool but also a bit strange, how did it happened ?

First of all thank you for this interview!

Well, as soon as our bassist Dimosthenis and I formed Acid Mammoth, we needed someone for lead guitars. While my father joining us might seem like a strange decision considering the age gap and the fact that we are related, he is actually the perfect man for the job! Ever since the 1970s growing up in Canada, he’s been a die-hard Sabbath fan. Dimos was also very agreeable with this, since he’s also known my father for the better part of a decade, as me and Dimos have been friends for quite a long time. So instead of searching for someone else to fill the spot, from the get-go we could think of no one better to play lead guitars in the band than my dad. He’s got that Iommi feel in the guitars that we really love. I don’t need a virtuoso that can play super-fast solos and stuff, in my opinion music is an art, not a sport, and super complicated riffs and ultra-fast solos do not characterize our music. He’s just the perfect guy for the job. Of course, being related and feeling so comfortable with each other, it’s very easy for us to communicate and exchange ideas, and Dimos and Marios are also super cool with him. There is no awkwardness or shyness because he's my dad, they are talking freely to each other.

2 Would you say that eventhough the age gap, you 3 and him have the same influences ? Or sometimes you share with him new stuffs and he shares with you old gems ? Did he played with other bands before Acid Mammoth ?

He always shared old gems with me, in fact he is the one who introduced me to rock/metal in the first place. I grew up listening to all the greats such as Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc and they definitely had a considerable impact in our songwriting. And vice versa, I constantly bombard him with music from new bands that he may not know. He did play with other bands in the past, he had a classic rock band in the 90s and an atmospheric doom/goth project in the 00s, but both acts are not a thing anymore.
The four of us share a lot of the same influences and at the same time each of us has his own unique musical background. For example, we are all Sabbath fanatics obviously and share a love for many current bands in the scene. Additionally, like I mentioned before my father and I have a big classic rock background and we’re very high on all the classic titans like Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Dimos loves the really heavy sludge stuff as well as psych, and our drummer Marios is more of a traditionalist when it comes to doom with early Candlemass and Saint Vitus, and he also listens to lots of post-metal/post-rock.

3 To me your voice is close to a young Ozzy, do you agree ?

That’s a great compliment, thank you! Well that’s where the Sabbath influences come in! The singing on the album is high pitched and shares a lot of the elements of the vocal melodies of Sabbath. It wasn’t intentional though, I didn’t decide one day to try and sound like Ozzy, it just came off naturally this way as I sang along with the riffs. But of course I am a mere mortal and I will never reach the magnificence of Ozzy’s voice! In my opinion Ozzy as a singer is actually underrated by a good number of people in the general metal community that just consider him to be an all-time-classic recognizable voice but not a great singer. But if they noticed, his singing is really, really great and he reached really high notes. In my opinion you don’t have to do endless vibratos with your voice to be a great singer.

4 As you say I also think there's a lot of Black Sabbath in your music, but you also dare to do long songs as "Tree of Woe" or "Under acid hoof" and add some other influences (I hear black metal in "Tusk of doom solo); would you say it's your way to sound different to your "master" ?

Sabbath are indeed our main influence it is clearly noticeable in our music, but at the same time we are doing our own thing. It is true that originality is very difficult to be achieved in this particular genre, unless you make something that's completely different and new and no one's heard it before. Authenticity on the other hand is very important. Your music has to be authentic and not just a copy paste of someone else's work. You need to incorporate your own unique style and yourself into it to make it your own. Our music might not be something completely new and unique, but it is fresh and authentic, and it is not just different versions of Iommi’s riffs. Glad you noticed this in the solo of "Tusks of Doom"! It's an evil track, and it needed an evil solo! As for the extended length in some songs in the album, it just happened naturally during the songwriting process, these songs needed more time given to them to tell their story.

5 Who writes the lyrics ? Are they based on books or movies or at least influenced by them ? And are they very meaningful to you or just stories you're telling ?

My father and I wrote the lyrics for the band's two albums. My father is a native speaker of English and I’m studying English literature at the university so it is very easy for the both of us to write something in English that works well. The writing process is like a collaboration, like a piece that is sent back and forth between us that expands until it finally becomes a song. When it comes to lyrics our goal has always been to write something that complements our music. We are telling our own stories for the most part, but we are indeed greatly influenced by books and movies. We love the horror genre as a band, and its concepts can easily be noticed in our music, our lyrics and the whole aesthetics of the band. There are tales of witchcraft, death and horror in all our lyrics, while we also have songs like for example “Eternal Sleep” from our 2017 debut album that tell different stories.

6 Would you like to do (once I mean) a concept album ?

Yes! In fact we are considering the possibility of our next full-length being a concept album. Of course right now our focus is 100% on “Under Acid Hoof”, but there are definitely some thoughts for the future. Concept albums are always special and we would love to make one someday.

7 Talking back about the first album, it was only released digitally, do you planned to do a physical release for it (with HPS) ?

We have indeed been contacted by people asking us for the possibility of a physical release for our debut. While it is exclusively digital for the moment and we haven’t made any talks or actions towards its physical release, it is absolutely one of our plans going forward. I doubt it will happen anytime soon as now all our time and attention is fixed on the release and promotion of “Under Acid Hoof”, but we will definitely pursue it when the tome is right. It is not a question of if there will ever be a physical release of the album, it’s just a matter of when!

8 I like the artwork very much and ilove the idea to have it witha red vinyl... are you, yourself a vinyl lover ? Who drew this artwork ?

The red vinyl version is our favorite too! The album art was made by Branca Studio, one of the best artists in the scene in my opinion. He has his own unique aesthetic style in his creations that complemented our music perfectly in “Under Acid Hoof”. I do love vinyl, I grew up listening to my father’s records and it wasn’t long until I started collecting my own. It always looks and sounds better when it’s on vinyl! And it’s true, it does. I don’t collect as often as I did a few years ago, but I am trying to buy new ones as often as I can. I’m always trying to balance getting older albums that I do not own with getting brand new releases. And of course, getting a vinyl release of our own music has always been a desire of ours, and now it has finally happened! HPS really did an amazing job, all versions of the “Under Acid Hoof” release look really beautiful!

9 Did you work with Branca studio on the arkwork or did you choose in their back catalogue ?

It was an original and brand new artwork made specifically for the new album. Initially we discussed a few ideas for the artwork and Branca came up with this awesome cover. We were very excited when we saw it completed for the first time, it gave the album a whole new aura. Magnificent work!

10 In France greek metal is better known for its extrem master as Nightfall, Rotting Christ or Septicflesh... I discovered this year Nightstalker and Planet of Zeus (both on HPS), are these 2 bands friends of yours, and do you feel there's a big stoner scene in Greece ?

I don't know them personally but we really dig their music and everything that they’re doing. There is a huge stoner/heavy rock community here in Greece and the vast majority of stoner and heavy rock bands here have a great following and you often see gigs getting sold out all the time. Even people who are not into rock in general listen to stoner and heavy rock bands from Greece and attend their gigs. As for the extreme metal scene in Greece that you mentioned, in my opinion if Rotting Christ and Septic Flesh didn’t exist I don’t know if there would be a Greek metal scene at all or how it would be without them. And I have noticed with Septic Flesh especially that they have a huge following in France, that’s a very nice thing to see!

11 Also from France Greece seems to live very harsh time... I guess it isn't really easy to play in a band at the moment... Have you many opportunities to play shows and to sell/spread your music ?

From a financial standpoint it is definitely not a piece of cake, a band is truly an expensive undertaking especially if you consider all the money we’ve spent for all the gear, the rehearsals and the recordings. However this is our dream and we are not going to let this all fade away into oblivion for money. Money can be replaced, but all these beautiful experiences we’ve received with this band can never be replaced or relived. We’ve had no problem playing shows and spreading our music so far. We are really grateful to all those who have supported us thus far and continue to support us.

12 So my next question is obvious ! Will you do a tour to support the new album ? Will you play in France ?

Playing shows and especially abroad is one of our priorities following the release of the new album! We would love to come to France, and if the opportunity presented itself we would do it in a heartbeat!!

13 The last word is for you

Come 2020, you can expect a lot of great things from the band as we will continue doing what we love. We can’t wait for you to hear our new album in its entirety! Thank you very much for this interview Cyril and I wish you all the best with COREandCO! Cheers!
